Federal Holidays vs. National Observances
As a citizen, it is essential to know the difference between your federal holidays and other national celebrations. APJ tells you that federal holidays are designated by the U.S. government, meaning that non-essential federal government offices are closed and employees are paid for the day. Many businesses and schools observe these holidays.
National holidays are widely recognized and celebrated in many ways, but are not necessarily federal holidays and may not result in a day off from work or school. These include Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, and Earth Day.
Planning Around Holidays
Knowing the holiday schedule can help you:
- Avoid unexpected closures of banks, post offices, and government offices.
- Plan family vacations and short trips to make the most of the holiday season.
- Coordinate business meetings and deadlines to avoid disruptions
- Anticipate retail sales events like Black Friday.
